About Evolving Canvases

Evolving Canvases is a socially engaged arts organisation using creative practice to support mental health, addiction recovery, and community participation. Our work is rooted in lived experience and focused on creating accessible, respectful spaces where people can explore their stories, connect with others, and take part in creative activity without judgement.

Evolving Canvases began with a three-day curated exhibition at Bluey Bluey Gallery [video below] that brought together twelve artists responding to their own experiences of mental health. The exhibition became a catalyst for conversation, with audiences using the artwork as a way to talk openly about experiences that are often hidden or stigmatised. One visitor described it as the first time she had felt able to speak about her mental health in public, and the first time she had felt that it was “okay not to be okay”. That response shaped the direction of the organisation.

Since then, Evolving Canvases has developed into a platform for participatory workshops, collaborative projects and community-facing creative activity across multiple art forms, including visual art, photography, and mixed media. Our focus is not on a single discipline, but on process, participation and inclusion—using creativity as a tool for expression, reflection and connection.

Evolving Canvases is a Community Interest Company (CIC) with a clear safeguarding and governance structure and an occupational therapist on a board of directors. We work in partnership with community, mental health and recovery-focused organisations to deliver projects that prioritise dignity, consent and accessibility. We exist to ensure that creativity is not a luxury, but a meaningful and supportive resource for people navigating mental health challenges, recovery, and social isolation.
