LEO KEYTER
Leo Keyter is a dynamic and innovative artist born in Southampton, who has lived across the south of England, drawing inspiration from the diverse communities and experiences encountered throughout this journey. With each move, Leo has built a new home and community, finding a consistent sense of belonging within the artistic circles wherever life has taken them. For Leo, art has always been more than a passion—it is home. Leo’s artistic path truly began during their A-Level studies when an unexpected gap in their timetable led them to choose art as a focus. This decision proved to be a turning point, sparking a lifelong dedication to the craft. Guided by the influential mentorship of their sixth-form teacher, Mr. Clifford, Leo developed a deep understanding of art’s potential to convey powerful ideas and emotions. Formally educated in art, Leo is currently pursuing a degree in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts. Their work is characterized by a strong personal connection to the themes of identity and self-expression, often delving into abstract and interactive forms. One of Leo’s most significant projects was an unsealed chalk self-portrait that was intentionally left vulnerable to touch during an exhibition. Watching it be destroyed by viewers was a profound experience that cemented Leo’s interest in creating interactive art, where the audience plays a crucial role in the work’s evolution. Leo identifies as a performance artist, painter, and interactive artist, with a distinct approach that merges expressive gestures and abstract concepts. Their work is often a reflection of their inner thoughts and emotions, conveyed through a consistent colour palette and style that masks deeper, more complex feelings. They take pride in art that provokes strong emotional responses or actions from viewers, striving to create pieces that challenge conventional perspectives and encourage new ways of engaging with art and society. Leo’s artistic influences include pioneers in performance and interactive art such as Marina Abramovic, Cassils, and Felix Gonzales-Torres. Their work has been exhibited in the Bluey Bluey gallery, Norwich as part of the Evolving Canvasses group, and they are eager to continue showcasing their art in future exhibitions. Ultimately, Leo aims to create art that not only stimulates thought but also redefines the relationship between the viewer and the artist, leaving a lasting impact on the way art is experienced.
